Q4 Distance Learning - Week 10 Assignments - Finish Make-up Work + Optional Yearbook Signing in Google Classroom

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 10 Assignments - Finish Make-up Work + Optional Yearbook Signing

*Note: There will be no Google Meets this week for English. If you would like to Google Meet to ask questions/talk through any assignments, please e-mail me and we can set up an appointment time.

Step 1: Please double check that you have completed all assignments in Google Classroom (finished the work and clicked "Turn in"). The best thing to do when you log into Google Classroom is to click on "Classwork" at the top to see your assignments list. It is the easiest/clearest page to see what you have and have not turned in yet.

I still have about 5 assignments left to grade and a lot of make-up work many students have e-mailed me about. You may notice my e-mail responses slow down or stop this week as I work to finish grades by Friday at noon. Thank you in advance for getting these last few assignments in before I grade them because I may not have time to go back and grade any late work for these with the deadline approaching.

Step 2: Sign my Virtual Yearbook? (OPTIONAL)

To my Pioneers,
Although this year didn’t end the way we planned, that doesn’t mean we can’t still sign each other’s yearbooks! This is my virtual yearbook page (attached), so if you have a message for me, please type it in one of the boxes in the document below. Feel free to use any font/color lettering you’d like! I can see everyone’s names in the version history, so thank you for keeping your messages school appropriate. :)
I also posted a clear copy of this document below so you can make a copy for yourself to share with your friends (or even staff/teachers). Just make sure you only share with friends you trust so you don’t get any inappropriate messages on your page. Then, when the year is done, you can print it and put it in your actual yearbook!
Thank you all for a wonderful, fun year. I’m going to miss each of you!!!
-Mrs. Flaherty

Steps 1 is due this Wednesday, 6/3/20 at Midnight so I have time to grade everything by Friday. Please remember to turn this assignment in Google Classroom (or mark it as done). I will be following up Wednesday morning with a video message. Thank you so much!

Due:

“One-Pager” Assignment: Q4 RC Quiz Alternative in Google Classroom

“One-Pager” Assignment: Q4 RC Quiz Alternative

A lot of students have been asking about what we’re going to do for RC book reading/quizzes this quarter. Unfortunately, we don’t have access to the RC quiz program from home. So, we’ve come up with an alternative assignment. This quarter, you will only need to read ONE book of your choice (instead of our normal two), and instead of a quiz, you will be completing this “One-Pager” visual book report (attached).

You may have already read a book you had at home since Distance Learning began; if so, you can use that book for your "One-Pager."
If you haven't read a book yet, there are several ways you can get/choose a book listed in the attached video and presentation from our librarian, Mrs. Fulleman.

Once you've read your book, you can either do the "One-Pager" on a piece of paper, take a picture of it, upload it to Google Drive and then attach it to this assignment in Google Classroom.

OR

You can click "Create" to directly attach a Google Doc or Google Slide to this assignment to complete your "One-Pager" online/digitally.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at: [email protected]. Thank you!

Due:

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 9 Assignments - Finish the One-Pager and Make-up Work + Extra Credit in Google Classroom

Step 1: Continue reading your free choice RC or other book (if you haven't already finished reading a book), and finish working on the One-Pager assignment due this Friday, 5/29/20 by Midnight.

Step 2: Double check that you have completed all assignments in Google Classroom (finished the work and clicked "Turn in"). It is the easiest/clearest page to see what you have and have not turned in yet.

Step 3: 8th Grade End-of-the-Year Reflection Bento Box (10 Extra Credit Bonus Points)
-Please follow the directions attached if you'd like to reflect on your 8th grade year and earn some extra credit bonus points in the process. This is an OPTIONAL assignment just for fun.

Step 4: Sign my Virtual Yearbook?

Due:

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 8 Assignments - Anne Frank Reading with Final Quiz + One Pager Continued in Google Classroom

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 8 Assignments - Anne Frank Reading with Final Quiz + One Pager Continued

Step 1: Please log-in/check-in to our Google Meet this MONDAY OR WEDNESDAY at 9 a.m. IF you want to read "The Diary of Anne Frank" play together (If you know you haven't earned credit for it yet in IC, you should definitely check-in; these will be your last 2 chances to read with us via Google Meet). We'll be reading Act 2, Scenes 4 and 5 this week (pp. 347-352), which will conclude the play! You won't need to log in both days this time, just one or the other as we'll be reading the same scenes/pages each day.

-If you need credit in IC still, and have technical difficulties either day this week, don't worry. Just e-mail me, and I'll take note of it.

-If you already got credit for reading with us and would prefer to read Act 2, Scenes 4 and 5 on your own, feel free. You can read it directly in your actual, physical textbook, or if you prefer to have it read to you, you can log in to your online textbook and play each page:

my.hrw.com
username = school e-mail
password = *flMMDDYY (star, first initial, last initial, month, day, year of your birthday)

Please be careful typing in your username/password, because it only gives you two tries and then locks you out. If this happens, let me know and I can try to get you back in via e-mail.

Step 2: When finished reading the play, please take the short quiz posted in Google Classroom on Wednesday. This will conclude our study of "The Diary of Anne Frank."

Step 3: Continue reading your free choice RC or other book (if you haven't already finished reading a book), and continue working on the One-Pager assignment due 5/29/20.

Step 4: If you are a Drabinski student, and haven't already, please remember to finish your Civil War Letter assignment in history. You'll be getting a small grammar grade in English AND a content grade in history for this assignment.

-Wolf students ran out of time to do this assignment, so your grade will show as EX for exempt/excused, and it will not affect your grade.

All of these steps are due this Friday, 5/22/20 at Midnight; however, I encourage you to do them during your Monday/Wednesday English blocks. Please remember to turn this assignment in once you've completed all the steps, and e-mail me if you have any questions. Thank you so much!

Due:

"The Diary of Anne Frank" Play - Final Quiz in Google Classroom

"The Diary of Anne Frank" Play - Final Quiz

Please read the questions carefully, and answer them to the best of your knowledge. This is an open-book quiz, so you may use pp. 279-352 in your textbook. Good luck! :)

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 7 Assignments - Anne Frank Reading with Characterization Evidence + One Pager Continued

Step 1: Please log-in/check-in to our Google Meets this MONDAY and WEDNESDAY at 9 a.m. IF you want to read "The Diary of Anne Frank" play together (If you know you haven't earned credit for it yet, you should definitely check-in). We'll be reading Act 2, Scenes 2 and 3 this week (pp. 334-347).

-If you have technical difficulties either day, don't worry. Just e-mail me, and I'll take note of it.

-If you already got credit for reading with us and would prefer to read Act 2, Scenes 2 and 3 on your own, feel free. You can read it directly in your actual, physical textbook, or if you prefer to have it read to you, you can log in to your online textbook and play each page (you can also play all the little side-videos in the online textbook too, which are interesting):

my.hrw.com
username = school e-mail
password = *flMMDDYY (star, first initial, last initial, month, day, year of your birthday)

Please be careful typing in your username/password, because it only gives you two tries and then locks you out. If this happens, let me know and I can try to get you back in via e-mail.

Step 2: Please read/follow the directions carefully in the attached "Anne Frank Character Evidence Collection Chart" assignment. You'll be collecting quotes/evidence that show how the authors of the play developed the characters' personalities. The quotes can come from any page in the play, not just this week's reading.

Step 3: Continue reading your free choice RC or other book (if you haven't already finished reading a book), and continue working on the One-Pager assignment due 5/29/20.

Step 4: If you haven't already, please remember to finish your Civil War Letter assignment in history. I believe your history teacher already told you, but you'll be getting a grammar grade in English AND a content grade in history for this assignment.

All of these steps are due this Friday, 5/15/20 at Midnight; however, I encourage you to do them during your Monday/Wednesday English blocks. Please remember to turn this assignment in once you've completed all the steps, and e-mail me if you have any questions.

Due:

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 4 Assignments - Recognizing Run-on Sentences, Finishing Poetry and Starting Anne Frank in Google Classroom

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 4 Assignments - Recognizing Run-on Sentences, Finishing Poetry and Starting Anne Frank

***Please Note: There will be a required log-in/check-in for WEDNESDAY'S Google Meet at 9 a.m. this week (instead of optional like I've been doing) because we're going to start reading "The Diary of Anne Frank" play in our textbook together.

Step 1: Please remember to do your "COVID Chronicles" journal entries for days 7-8 this week (no need to submit the document yet; I can just go in and read them as you complete them).

Step 2: Recognizing Run-on Sentences
I noticed many students have been using run-on sentences in their journal writing. Run-on sentences are two or more complete sentences/thoughts smashed together without proper punctuation to separate them. Run-on sentences often sound like rambling or feel like they never stop.

-Please log-in to IXL.com
-Once you click on "Learning" and then "Language Arts," please click on "8th Grade"
-Scroll down to the "Grammar and Mechanics" section
-Please complete "Z6: Is it a complete sentence or a run-on?"
-You should do and re-do this section for as many points as you want, but an 80 will be considered 100% (8/8 in Infinite Campus). If you score over an 80, it will count as extra credit points.

Step 3: Please participate in the last round of the March Madness Poetry Competition.
-Please read the final attached poems, click on the "Cast your Vote" link at the bottom of the poems, and complete the quick form and submit your final choice. There will be NO additional questions this week; only the vote for the winner.
-The winning poet will be announced next week :)

Step 4: Please log-in/check-in to our Google Meet on WEDNESDAY, 4/22/20 at 9 a.m. We're going to start reading "The Diary of Anne Frank" play together.
-If you have technical difficulties that day, don't worry. I will post what pages we read so you can keep up with us.

All of these steps are due this Friday, 4/24/20 at Midnight; however, I encourage you to do them during your Monday/Wednesday English blocks. Please remember to turn this assignment in once you've completed all the steps, and e-mail me or join us during a scheduled Google Meet on Wednesday at 9 a.m. or Friday at 10 a.m. if you have any questions.

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 3 Assignments - Recognizing Sentence Fragments and Poetry Continued in Google Classroom

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 3 Assignments - Recognizing Sentence Fragments and Poetry Continued

Step 2: Please remember to do your "COVID Chronicles" journal entries for days 5-6 this week (no need to submit the document yet; I can just go in and read them as you complete them).

Step 3: Recognizing Sentence Fragments
I noticed many students have been using sentence fragments in their journal writing. Sentence fragments are incomplete thoughts and are usually missing a subject (person, place or thing doing the action in the sentence) or verb (action word), or the verb is not written in the correct form so the sentence doesn't make sense when read.
-Please log-in to IXL.com
-Once you click on "Learning" and then "Language Arts," please click on "8th Grade"
-Scroll down to the "Grammar and Mechanics" section
-Please complete "Z5: Is it a complete sentence or a fragment?"
-You should do and re-do this section for as many points as you want

Step 4: Finally, please participate in the next round of the March Madness Poetry Competition.
-Please read the attached poems in the bracket for your class period, click on the "Cast your Vote" link at the bottom of the poems, and complete the quick form/questions and submit your responses.

Q4 Distance Learning - Week 2 Assignments - Figurative Language Review and Intro. to Poetry

Step 1: Please remember to do your "COVID Chronicles" journal entries for days 3-4 this week (no need to submit the document yet; I can just go in and read them as you complete them).

Step 2: Please review the attached "Figurative Language Review" PDF. If you weren't able to log in to Discovery Education last week, this can help with last week's assignment too.
-The only one the PDF doesn't have that you need for this week's assignments is "Pun," which is "a joke using the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings."
Examples are: "I was struggling to figure out how lightning works, but then it struck me," or "After hours of waiting for the bowling alley to open, we finally got the ball rolling."

Step 3: Please log-in to IXL.com like you do for math. We now have an English section in IXL! :)
-Once you click on "Learning" and then "Language Arts," please click on "8th Grade."
-Please complete "E5: Interpret Figures of Speech" and "E6: Classify Figures of Speech" under "Reading Strategies."
Or, if you know how to get to the "Recommendations Wall," you should be able to get to them that way too.
-I believe you can go in and do these as many times as you want to get the highest scores possible? Please let me know if this is correct, and feel free to re-do them for as many points as you want.

Step 4: Finally, please participate in the March Madness Poetry Competition attached. To find out about this competition, watch this short Slides Presentation/Video by Mrs. Stauch at: https://share.vidyard.com/watch/it49MJgcyZwW6dzgGGPVFs?
-Then, read the attached poems in the bracket for your class period, click on the "Cast your Vote" link at the bottom of the poems, and complete the quick form/questions and submit your responses.
-Winning poets in each class will square-up in the next round (next Monday).

All of these steps are due this Friday, 4/3/20 at Midnight; however, I encourage you to do them during your Monday/Wednesday English blocks. Please remember to turn this assignment in once you've completed all the steps, and e-mail me or join us during a scheduled Google Meet if you have any questions.
