Mrs. Doris Barela-Fossen

I have been teaching at Sierra Vista Junior High since 2004.  I am a Teacher of Family and Consumer Sciences Culinary / Foods and Nutrition for over 21 years. Prior to coming to Sierra Vista, I taught at Reseda High School and Cal State University Northridge.

I'm currently the California State Vice President of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Los Angeles Metro District President of American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.  I am a Master Teacher in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences / Home Economics Education.

I earned a Master's Degree from CSU Northridge (1994), in Family and Consumer Sciences. A Bachelors in Home Economics from CSU Northridge (1983) and and Associates for Sciences in Home Economics from LA. Valley College (1978). My Teaching Credentials are a single Subject Home Economics Education / Generalist, A single Subject in Health Science, A multiple subject K-12 and a credential in Cross Cultural Acquisition.

I am a native to the City of Angeles. Born in Culver City CA.  My mother was a single parent who raised 8 children on her own.  However,  I have several step brothers and sisters totaling 13 siblings.
 
As I child I grew up in Reseda Ca. I attended public schools in LAUSD and graduated from Reseda High School, majoring in Home Economics.

In 1995 I was awarded CSU Northridge "Student Teacher of the Year". In 1996 I was recognized as an LAUSD "Teacher of the Year" and in 1998 one of Los Angeles'  "Most Inspirational Teachers". I am dedicated to educating students on how to take care of themselves by teaching the skills they need to succeed.
I was recently awarded "California's Home Economics" Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the year for 2015-2016.  The recommendation came from the CA Department of Education in Home Economics Education.  I am currently a candidate for the National Award.
