FAQs Math 8

  •  How are grades calculated?

Math grades reflect how much of the standards the student has mastered.  Individual achievement is the basis for grades.  Test/quiz scores are weighted at 80% of the grade and all other assignments whether classified as homework, class work, or practice sets are weighted at 20%.

               90-100%  A          80-89%   B        70-79%  C         60-69%  D

any percentage lower than listed is not a passing grade

  • I added up all my points, why is my grade is different than the grade book?

Remember math grades are weighted so that means the assessments (test/quiz scores) weigh more heavily on the overall letter grade.  As more items are included in the assessment category, grades will start to change a bit.  Tests, worth 100 points will have a greater impact on the percentage than quizzes.  Quizzes will in turn have more impact on your grade than other practice assignments but less than tests.

  • What about using the restroom during class?

When it is necessary to leave class to use the restroom, please have your paper restroom pass ready.  The paper pass needs to be given to me before you leave the classroom with it.  You will receive 2 passes at the start of each quarter, after that math money will be needed to get additional passes.

  • What about extra credit?

Extra credit is not an offered option in math class.  There may be a few bonus points built into an assignment or assessment but that is the only option for "extra credit."

  • What if I am absent?

First, get to feeling better!  Then check the class assignments Google Classroom.  If you are feeling up to getting a head start, the assignment schedule, and any link information is listed there.  You can also email me to let me know what's happening.  We can then discuss what to do and decide on a due date for the things you missed because of your absence.

  • What about homework?

Practice problem sets are designed to give students independent practice of the skills and concepts covered in class.  These practice sets will be assigned in class and are expected to be completed during class.  If for some reason the assignments are not completed in class, you can work on them outside of class time and turn them in the next day.  It is important that these practice sets, which are assigned Monday - Thursday are completed on time so that it can be reviewed/discussed in class the next day as needed.  This is so that students are able to see for themselves what they understand and what needs to be worked on BEFORE  a quiz or test!   I try not to assign practice over the weekend, but occasionally it may be necessary.

You can find assignments and announcements about assessments on our Google Classroom.

Assignments can be turned in late for partial points as long as they are turned in BEFORE the unit test. .

  • How many assessments will there be in each quarter?

I anticipate two or three units to be covered each quarter.  Each unit will have an end of unit test and usually one or two quizzes.  Assessments will often have a "practice" before we take the quiz or test and can be used as a study guide as we will go over all questions together before the assessment.  Quizzes are often open note (notes must be on paper).  Tests are not open note.  If calculators are allowed, they will be provided for you during practice time and for the assessments.

  • Can I have extra time on a test or quiz?

Assessments are designed to be completed within the time frame provided in class that day.

  • What if I need extra help beyond class time?

My goal each class is for you to practice and gain understanding of the skill/concept before you leave.  However, if there are times you need that extra bit, please let me know.  Talk to me!  We can get it done together!  Send me an email [email protected]
