MILLION WORDS CONTEST ENDS TODAY!!!! If you plan on being invited to the May 12th , 8th grade awards ceremony for reading one million words independently this year, please have all SRC tests taken by Friday during lunch.  I will post the winners over the weekend.

In class: Talk about and come up with a plan for creating a " Connection Map" for the novel An Island Like you. What design can you use that is a theme, topic or symbol used in the novel. Example: Islands for each short story, color code characters.
Use the Puerto Rican Flag, Palm trees, music notes, makeup etc. Use something from each story to represent( a symbol) Label the stories and characters. Use colors that represent the mood or " feeling " of the piece. Show connections. You have all of this class to come up with an idea and lay it out  on pg. 24 in your notebook. Then use a computer paper to begin your part of the drawing. ( Make sure you have divided the butcher paper into four parts. You can work on your section( s) at home. If there are only three in your group, then share one section and work on that in class.  This will need to be presented in class on Friday. 
 
You will have 20 minutes on Thursday in class as well. The rest is for homework.

Students will read and annotate four articles and then write an argumentative  multi-paragraph essay after choosing one side of the topic. This will be the fourth multi-paragraph essay each student should have written this quarter. The focus should be on analysis and elaboration of evidence. In other words, don't just stop once you find evidence to support your claim in each topic sentence! Keep writing, analyzing and thinking "forward" about each piece of evidence you have found. Use transitional phrases and cite your sources either by author's last name or source number. Students should not work on this assignment from home outside of school hours. If the time stamp shows the assignment  was opened outside of class time, a student may receive no credit.

In class we are reading two debate articles from Scope Magazine on pages 22-23. In groups using whiteboards we will write the negatively connotative words chosen by the author from the first article, and then the positively connotative  words chosen by the author from the second article. Groups will then share and develop a claim for each of the two articles that we will share across the classroom.
 
Move away from writing claims that have the words should or should not. Develop more of a thesis statement style claim that is filled with 8th grade level vocabulary words and adjectives that have connotative meaning.

Next, a  transition word with a rebuttal or refutal sentence that is a third piece of evidence to support your THESIS statement. So this piece of evidence should be your strongest yet to refute the piece of evidence you have in your counterargument. Finally your analysis sentence that answers So What? about your evidence.

NARRATIVE GROUP GOOGLE DOC
Each group has spent over two weeks developing four or five different ideas for stories. They will have had plenty of time in class to choose the one story they want to focus on for their group and make their final narrative for a grade. TEST ON CITATION
You will be given a sentence to cite correctly. I will ask you to leave out words in the beginning , the middle and the ending.
Example:  The novel is Stranded by Jeff Probst
Jane stood on the rocks next to the Lucky Star, holding her camera out in front of her.
1. Only use Jane stood and cite it correctly.
Answer: "Jane stood..."(Probst 101).
2. Only use Jane stood next to the Lucky Star.
Answer: " Jane stood...next to the Lucky Star..."(101).
3. Only use holding her camera out in front of her.

Remember that you only put the author's name the very first time you cite in a paper. Afterwards only write the pg. number for the citation.
